JANKOV, J. I. 1986. The production of the brown trout (Salmo trutta fario L.) in the Rilska River, Bulgaria. Pol. Arch. Hydrobiol. 33: 455-462.

ABSTRACT

The production of brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) was estimated at three sites in the upper course of the Rilska River, southern Bułgaria. No other fish species were present. Productivity increased in a downstream direction with increase in width, depth and discharge: population density 1650-2278 indiv./ha, standing crop 32.95-85.70 kg/ha, mean biomass 22.67-85.98 kg/ha, production 23.04-89.89 kg/ha/yr.

5. SUMMARY

The Rilska is a typical mountain stream, which rises in the Rila mountain, southern Bułgaria.

The populations of brown trout, the only fish species present, were sampled at 3 sites using electrofishing. Population density was estimated after Zippin’s method (1956, 1958) and the production was calculated by the method by Ricker (1975).

The values for density, standing crop and production increased downstream with increase in width, depth and discharge. The production of brown trout, including the 0 age group was as follows: site 1 — 4.7 g m-2 yr-1, site 2 — 12.2 g m-2 yr-1, site 3 — 16.0 g m-2 yr-1 (mean — 11.0 g m-2 yr-1). The average production is close to the maximum production of 12 g m-2 yr-1 for trout streams (Le Cren 1969) and is higher than in most of the rivers investigated from the northern parts of Europe. This is probably due to the more suitable climatic and other abiotic factors, and to the fact that there is no interspecific competition.

Zagęszczenie populacji oszacowano metodą Zippina (1956. 1958), a produkcję obliczono metodą Rickera (1975).

Mann, R. H. K. and Penczak, T. 1986: Fish production in rivers: a review. Polskie Archiwum Hydrobiologii, 33, 233–247.

ABSTRACT

The spatial separation of different fish species and age-groups in flowing-waters, and the wide-ranging movements, and the wide-ranging movements of some species, all influence the design of fish production studies and the accuracy of the results. Unrepresentative sampling can be a serious problem in large rivers, and often 0 group producton is ignored even though it can form over 50 per cent of the total. Production levels arc determined by abiotic and biotic factors, with the former of greater importance in relatively unstable habitats (e.g. upland streams) whereas habitat diversity, extent of cover and food resources have an increased relevance in more benign habitats.

7. SUMMARY

Fish production data (in the Ivlev sense) have much potential in fishery management, especially in assessing the impacts of environmental perturbations or in determining optimum fish harvests. But the component parameters require accurate estimation in order to predict the outcome of a particular management regime with any confidence. Errors in riverine studies can arise from the variability of habitats along the river continuum, unless sampling sites are chosen with sufficient care to avoid fish species compositions or age-structures to be misrepresented in the samples.

Productivity levels are under both biotic and abiotic influence, with the latter being of prime importance in many upland waters. Biotic variables (cover, food, predation) have more influence in stable environments, although physical parameters, especially water temperature, can still play a major role in determining the characteristics of local fish populations.

Salmonid studies dominate the literature, but as yet we know little about the dynamics of non-salmonid populations. We would encourage more studies on the latter, particularly of the 0 group fish.

Te ostatnie są ważniejsze w wielu ciekach wyżynnych, natomiast parametry biotyczne (kryjówki, pokarm, drapieżnictwo) wywierają większy wpływ w środowiskach stałych, chociaż parametry fizyczne, a szczególnie temperatura, mogą odgrywać dużą rolę w określaniu charakterystyki lokalnych populacji ryb.

Mortensen, E., Penczak, T. 1988. Population, growth, biomass and production fish in a small stream In north-west Poland. Ekol . Pol. 36(3-4):445-458.

ABSTRACT: The population density, growth, biomass and production of brown trout, Salmo trutta L. and bullhead, Cottus gobio L. were investigated in a small stream in Poland. Population densities ranged from 5067 to 9066 fish · ha-1 for brown trout and 5468 to 7266 fish · ha-1 for bullhead. Mean annual biomass and total production were 10.1 kg · ha-1 and 36.6 kg · ha-1 · yr-1 for brown trout and 19.7 kg · ha-1 and 30.8 kg · ha-1 · yr-1 for bullhead, respectively. The 0 age group production of brown trout was similar to production found in other small streams in Europe.

6. SUMMARY

The samples of brown trout and bullhead were collected and density of these two species estimated in the Rudki Stream (a tributary of the Dobrzyca River), employing quantitative electrofishing surveys on two dates (6 June and 4 September 1984). Densities of stone loach were also estimated. The morphometry of the investigated site is presented in Figure 1.

To assess the theoretical density values the Zippin (1956, 1958) and Seber and Le Cren (1967) methods were applied and the results obtained with these methods are presented in Table 1. Brown trout were aged from scales, and bullheads from otoliths. The correlation coefficient between fish body weight (W) and total length (L) and estimators of the function log10 W = log10a + blog10L which was employed for back estimates of body weight at the times of each annulus formation are given in Table 2. The calculated body lengths and weights, necessary for calculating production and daily instantaneous growth rate (G%), are presented in Table 3. The annual production, mean biomass and turnover ratio for subsequent age groups of brown trout and bullhead from the Rudki Stream are shown in Table 4.

The Rudki Stream constitutes the spawning grounds of brown trout and an ecological niche for fish of the 0 age group. Fish of the I age group were recorded there in low abundance, perhaps because they gradually emigrate downstream the Rudki Stream and enter the Dobrzyca River, in which they grow well and reach their maturity (Penczak et al. 1986). Similar separation of the first age group from the others was observed in other small stream emptying into the Dobrzyca River and those flowing into a still larger river, the Piława River (the Gwda River drainage basin, North-Western Poland).

7. POLISH SUMMARY

Stosując 3 elektropołowy następcze w dwóch terminach (6 czerwiec i 4 wrzesień 1984) oceniono zagęszczenie i zebrano próby pstrąga potokowego i głowacza białopłetwego do oceny produkcji, w strumieniu Rudki (dopływ Dobrzycy). Oprócz wymienionych gatunków odłowiono tu także kilkanaście osobników śliza. Morfometria eksploatowanego stanowiska przedstawiona jest na rys. 1.

Do oceny teoretycznej wartości zagęszczenia zastosowano metody Zippina (1956, 1958) oraz Seber i Le Crena 1967) i wyniki tych ocen przedstawiono w tab. 1. Wiek pstrąga potokowego oceniono na podstawie łusek, głowacza — na podstawie otolitów. Współczynnik korelacji pomiędzy ciężarem ciała (W) i całkowitą długością ciała (L) oraz estymatory funkcji log10   W = log10 a + blog10 L, którą wykorzystano do odczytów wstecznych ciężaru ciała na czas formowania się kolejnych pierścieni rocznych, zamieszczono w tab. 2. Obliczone długości i ciężary ciała, niezbędne do obliczenia produkcji oraz dzienne tempo wzrostu (G%) przedstawiono w tab. 3. Roczną produkcję, średnią biomasę i współczynnik P : dla kolejnych grup wiekowych pstrąga i głowacza w potoku Rudki zamieszczono w tab. 4.

Ryby z grupy wiekowej I napotykano tutaj w niewielkiej liczbie, gdyż spływają one sukcesywnie Rudką do Dobrzycy, w której rosną dobrze i osiągają dojrzałość płciową (Penczak et al. 1986). Podobny rozdział pierwszej grupy wiekowej od pozostałych zaobserwowano w innych małych strumieniach wpadających do Dobrzycy i większej od niej Piławie (dorzecze Gwdy, pn.-zach. Polska).

Tadeusz Penczak, Javier Lobon-Cervia, Ken O’Hara, Henryk Jakubowski: Production and food consumption by fish populations in the Piława and Dobrzyca rivers, North Poland.  Pol. Arch. Hydrob., 33:  345-372.

ABSTRACT

Population density, wet weight of standing crop, average biomass and production at 8 sites on the Dobrzyca and Piława Rivers were: 518 — 4006 ind. ha-1, 21.3 — 301.6 kg ha-1, 15.4 — 216.1 kg ha-1, and 20.3 — 98.3 kg ha-1 yr-1, respectively. For brown trout and grayling these parameters were: 28 — 370 ind. ha-1, 2.8 — 82.4 kg ha-1, 1.8 — 61.0 kg ha-1, and 3.0 — 50.5 kg ha-1 yr”’, respectively. Production and food consumption were: 110.0 — 526.5 MJ ha-1 yr-1 and 934.8—6189.0 MJ ha-1 yr-1. respectively. For trout, grayling, pike, barbel, dace, roach and perch, the wet weight of all food types (fish, invertebrates, plants) needed to produce 1 kg of fish tissue ranged from 6.3 to 29.2 kg. (The lowest food consumption was at sites dominated by carnivorous fish and having an abundance of young age-groups.).

6. SUMMARY

Applying a catch per unit of effort method by electrofishing 1629 individuals of fish and lamprey were caught. Twenty fish and one lamprey species were recorded, with brown trout and grayling being commonest in the upper sites of both rivers. Population estimates were made with the three-sample maximum-likelihood Zippin method.

Seven species were directly investigated (brown trout, grayling, pike, barbel, dace, roach and perch) and their mean back-calculated standard length, mean weight, and estimated numbers of individuals for given age-groups (’Na ha-1) at the time of annulus formation are presented. At many sites the low density of the directly investigated species made it impossible to estimate some of these parameters and mortality (Z) separately at each site, and certain assumptions were introduced to overcome these problems.

The mean values of production and consumption of energy (MJ ha-1 yr-1) of the species living in both rivers, and the upper values of 95% CL, are given. These data, together with data on diet and its caloricity, enabled the wet weight of food types utilized to produce 1 kg of fish tissues to be assessed. The smallest amount of food consumed occurred at sites with a dominance of fish eating animal food and the presence of the youngest fish-ages groups.

7. STRESZCZENIE

Stosując metodę elektropołowów następczych, w stałych przedziałach czasu, odłowiono w Rzece Dobrzycy i Piławie (dorzecze Gwdy) 1629 ryb i minogów. W wymienionych rzekach stwierdzono obecność 20 gatunków ryb i jednego gatunku minoga. Pstrąg potokowy i lipień, bogatsze populacje formowały jedynie w górnych partiach obu rzek.

Uzyskane w pracy wyniki pozwoliły na ocenę ilości zjedzonego pokarmu potrzebnego do wyprodukowania 1 kg tkanek ryb w zależności do składu diety. Najmniejsze ilości skonsumowanego pokarmu miały miejsce u ryb na tych stanowiskach, gdzie w diecie dominował pokarm pochodzenia zwierzęcego i populacje były reprezentowane przez najmłodsze grupy wiekowe.
